Our church in November 2006

Welcome the blog of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church of Historic Fourth Ward / Freedmen’s Town, Houston Texas. Our church site is located at 1407 Valentine Street. Our church has been there since 1915.

On May 16, 2008 we suffered the tragedy of our church being demolished because of some structural problems that we were addressing. Because of the historic significance of our church, our engineer was in the process of evaluating and preparing to shore up the church for public safety reasons. We had plans to renovate and completely restore the church.

The Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church is a foundation church in Freedmen’s Town that was literally built with the hands and sacrifices of faith driven determined men and women of the congregation.

Our generation will commend your work to another. They will tell of your many acts.

Psalm 145:4

Freedmen’s Town is the only remaining post Civil War National Historic District of its kind in the United States. It was founded in the 1860′s by previously enslaved people of African Heritage, who relied upon God’s Love to rebuild their lives.
